Think back to elementary school, where Field Day was every kid’s favorite spring event. You got to go outside with friends and compete in various track and field events for ribbons or trophies. We designed this month’s Callout to be similar, but with a heaping helping of our kind of Good Livin’.

Divide your participants into two teams who will compete in several events of your choosing (a handy list of options is supplied below). And you can either designate a prize for the winning team, or let the winners pick the penalty PT for the losers. But regardless, have fun and celebrate with everyone at the end!

THE DETAILS:

  • Minimum 4 people but this works better with 10 or more

  • Zero mileage requirement, but feel free to add a distance component if you want

  • Pick a few event from options below:

    • Centipede Pushups

      • Each team creates a single line in the pushup position (rucks on), with the first person’s feet on the shoulders of the second person. The second person’s feet will be on the shoulders of the third person, and so on. The only feet on the ground will be the last person in line. Then both teams will perform as many pushups as possible.

    • Sandbag Races

      • This is a relay race where each team has a sandbag (you choose the weight), and both teams are lined up behind it. Pick a distance, and then each team sends one person with the sandbag out and back, tagging the next person to do the same. You can choose how the sandbag should be carried (Zercher carry, farmer carry, bear hug carry, back rack carry, overhead carry, etc). First team to send all members out and back is the winner.

    • Bear Crawl Races

      • Just like the Sandbag Race, but each team will be bear crawling out and back as fast as possible with rucks on. Remember, bears don’t have knees!

    • Elephant Races

      • Both teams line up in a single line, each participant bends over and extends their right hand forward and their left hand through their legs. The person behind reaches forward and holds the hand of the person in front of them, so that each team is joined by hands and must walk slowly like a plodding elephant. Both teams should be sent to a waypoint and back, the first team to return wins.

    • Multi-Legged Race

      • This one is a team-based version of the 3-legged race. Line up the entire team and strap the left leg of one GRT to the right leg of another GRT. Then have the entire team move forward as one big line (this will be very challenging). Either pick a certain distance to cross, or a time hack to reach a certain distance.

    • Pass the Worm

      • Connect several sandbags together with carabiners. Stand your teammates in a line and pass the connected sandbags from one end to the other. If your team is small, the person who started the passing runs down to the end and continues the passing, then the next person moves down so that the line of people keeps shifting and the connected sandbags keep moving. THE WORM CAN NEVER TOUCH THE GROUND. Continue this to a designated endpoint and the team that reaches it first is the winner.

    • Ruck Up Relay

      • Participants put their rucks into a single line and then split into two teams on opposite sides. Both teams send one person at a time to the center to pick up their ruck, put it on and run back to the line. As soon as the runner returns, the second teammate runs in to get their ruck, and so on. The winning team is the first to have all members with their rucks on.

    • GET CREATIVE!

      • This list is by no means exhaustive, you’re free to add any kind of physical competition that works best for your club members.

CADRE DAN

Cadre Dan…Jason McCarthy handed Dan his first GR1 in February of 2011 full of bricks wrapped in a towel. Since then Dan has been pounding pavement and building better Americans as Cadre for GORUCK. Every once in a while, he comes up with a half decent idea that GORUCK uses to keep Dan happy. Fueled by Copenhagen, Coffee and pure aggression (staples in 3rd SFG) Dan loves storytime during events and doing anything outside.
